That means that a farm must be certified to its relevant government-controlled organic standard to sell its cotton as organic, ensuring these agricultural practices are respected on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Once the cotton leaves the farm, it isn\u2019t covered by the same legal protections.However, a company might choose to use a tool like Textile Exchange\u2019s Organic Content Standard (OCS) or the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) to keep track of these fibers as they move from the gin through to the final product.<\/p>\n<p>In a notoriously complex supply chain, the purpose of the OCS is to help strengthen companies\u2019 claims that the products they sell contain organically grown fibers. This is the role of certification bodies.The certification bodies that check farms, and those that check other facilities in the supply chain, may also be different, and they check for different things according to the standards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accreditation bodies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Accreditation bodies monitor and assess the certification bodies to ensure that they are operating as intended. So, if a yarn came with a GOTS transaction certificate, it might be used in an OCS-certified fabric. Accountability sits across governments, voluntary standard owners (like us), certification bodies, and other stakeholders. Here are some of the fault lines we\u2019ve identified, and the actions we are taking to reinforce them.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-12 col-lg-7 offset-lg-1\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bellow\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bellow__title\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBetween farms and gins\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bellow__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW200402223 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200402223 BCX9\">While national organic standards certify the farm, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW200402223 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200402223 BCX9\">voluntary supply chain standards like the OCS start with the certification of the gin. Switching between standards at this stage can make it harder to deliver farm-level traceability to brands, but re-auditing the farms as part of the OCS would put extra work and costs on producers. Instead, we <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW200402223 BCX9\">have to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200402223 BCX9\"> rely on accurate information coming to us. That\u2019s why, together with GOTS, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW200402223 BCX9\">Textile Exchange has committed to collecting farm-level data from gins and working collaboratively with GOTS to reconcile farm-to-gin volumes<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200402223 BCX9\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW200402223 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bellow\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bellow__title\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBetween facilities\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bellow__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW194155182 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194155182 BCX9\">Managing the chain of custody of organically grown cotton as it moves between different facilities in the supply chain relies on <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW194155182 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194155182 BCX9\">a trail of physical and pdf certificates. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW194155182 BCX9\">Evidence suggests that these facilities are continuously finding ways to substitute certified organic fibers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194155182 BCX9\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW194155182 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194155182 BCX9\"> To identify and prevent this kind of fraud, we\u2019re doing everything we can to guide certification bodies as to what to look for, helping them detect it. While having certification data spread across different certification bodies has long made full traceability tricky, our newly launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/textileexchange.org\/trackit\/\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW240670626 BCX9\">Trackit<\/span><\/a><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW240670626 BCX9\"> program <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW240670626 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW240670626 BCX9\">centralizes and digitizes this data for volume reconciliation, providing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW240670626 BCX9\">increased supply chain visibility.
